Bone Grafts

Bone loss can have serious and lasting consequences for your oral health as well as your overall wellbeing. If you’re concerned about the health of your jawbone, you can protect it by scheduling a regular six-month checkup at your dentist’s office. One of the tasks your dentist will perform during a routine examination is to check your jawbone to ensure that it hasn’t lost any of its density. When you’re concerned about the health of your teeth, gums, and jawbone, you can always count on the dental team at All Smiles Northwest for the quality care and treatment you’re looking for.

Why is bone loss so dangerous?

Having a strong, healthy jawbone is essential for everybody. There are two common reasons for bone deterioration in the jaw. Bone loss may be caused by advanced periodontitis, in which an untreated bacterial infection spreads to the bone, and it may also be the result of having missing teeth, which deprives the jawbone of the regular stimulation it needs to stay strong and healthy. Some of the potential problems that can result from jawbone loss include:

  • Greater difficulty replacing missing teeth with options such as dentures or dental implants.
  • Gradual alteration of the appearance of your face.
  • The need for bone grafts to replace the missing bone.

How do bone grafts work?

Bone loss can be treated by your periodontist using a common procedure known as a bone graft. Bone grafts involve taking either a synthetic bone material or a piece of bone from elsewhere in the body and placing it in the jawbone. Over a period of several months, the presence of the new bone will stimulate your body to produce new bone tissue. Eventually, the original tissue from the graft is absorbed and replaced by the new tissue. Not only can your regenerated jawbone help to improve the appearance of your face, but it can also make it easier for you to maintain good oral health by allowing you to replace missing teeth as quickly as possible.
