How Are Dental Implants Placed in Your Mouth?

Studies reveal people with missing teeth are more prone to develop tooth decay, periodontal disease, and further tooth loss. Dental implants in Everett, WA, are one of the most popular and in-demand tooth replacement procedures in the dental industry today.

They are reliable, long-lasting, and they accurately mimic natural teeth in terms of function and appearance. How are dental implants placed?

The Dental Implant Process Revealed

Dental Implant Placement

To keep you comfortable and relaxed during the procedure, your oral surgeon will anesthetize you. Once the site is numb, a small incision is made to open your gum tissues and expose the jawbone underneath.

A tool is used to drill holes in your jawbone to receive the screw-shaped metal implants. Since these implants are designed to replace natural tooth roots, they will be embedded deep in your bone to offer stability and security while anchoring your artificial teeth.

By this time, you will be asked to wear a temporary denture. The denture is removable. So, you can take it off when you eat or sleep.

Waiting for Osseointegration

When the dental implants are placed, your oral surgeon will stitch the gum tissues back and wait for osseointegration to take place. This is a process where your bone tissues fuse completely with the metal implants.

Osseointegration normally takes several months to complete. This process should not be rushed because it is one of the most important steps that will determine the success of the procedure.

Abutment Placement

After the completion of osseointegration, another surgery will take place to attach the abutment. An abutment connects the implant to the crown. It’s a minor procedure that can be done in an outpatient setting.

The gum tissues are re-opened to expose the implant. Next, your oral surgeon will attach the abutment. Once the abutment is securely placed, the gum tissues are stitched back to close around the implant while leaving the abutment exposed.

Artificial Teeth Placement

The day you’ve been waiting for is finally here! As soon as your gums heal, an impression will be taken of your mouth. The impression will be sent to the lab to fabricate your artificial teeth.

Each artificial tooth is carefully designed so that it looks exactly like a natural tooth. This step will only take place if your implants have successfully integrated with your bone tissues.

Aftercare Instructions

After the surgery, it’s normal to experience swelling in your face and gums, slight bruising, tolerable pain, and minor bleeding. Your oral surgeon will prescribe antibiotics to prevent infection and pain killers to help you with the discomfort.

If pain and swelling continue after a week or more, notify your oral surgeon ASAP. While waiting for the site to heal, stick to a soft diet to avoid irritating the site.
